The ancient ruins of a Ringfort, known as a Caher Mór or "Ballyallaban stone fort" was one of our stops on the way up to the Cliffs of Moher.
The walk up through the trees was haunting but perhaps this was amplified by the misty day we had with the clouds descending over the landscape like a wool blanket. The walls of this Ringfort are nine feet thick and nine feet tall. At one point huge timbers would have hoisted a large thatched roof spanning the entire area. This fort dated back to 1308 as carbon dating revealed. The view of the sprawling landscape was impressive even with the heavy cloud and you could just imagine the families that called this place home and carved out a living on these green fields.
